Preparing for Tooth Removal

At Dentistry of Highland Village, our dentists will begin by thoroughly examining the affected tooth and surrounding area, which may include taking X-rays to assess the tooth’s shape, position, and any potential complications.

Once a tooth extraction is deemed necessary, we will explain the procedure to you in detail and discuss any potential risks or complications. We may also provide instructions before the tooth extraction procedure such as fasting or avoiding certain medications.

On the day of the dental extraction, our dentists will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. We also offer additional sedation dentistry options or pain management options for patients who may feel particularly anxious or sensitive to pain.

Extracting the Tooth

Once you’re comfortably anesthetized, our dentist will begin the tooth extraction process. This involves using a dental elevator to gently loosen the tooth and its roots from the socket. Then, with the aid of forceps, the tooth will be carefully removed, and the site will be cleaned. Gauze will be placed over the wound, and you will be instructed to apply pressure to promote blood clot formation, an essential part of the healing process.

Following the Procedure

After the tooth extraction, our dental team will closely monitor your bleeding and pain levels as the local anesthetic or sedation wears off. You may experience some mild discomfort during this time, but our dentists will provide instructions on how to minimize it over the next day. Some light bleeding should also be expected and should subside within a day.
